Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team earned its second straight victory by defeating the American University Eagles 70-56 this afternoon at the McCann Center. This was the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Red Foxes started the season 2-0 at home.
Junior forward Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) recorded a career high 23 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Magarity scored 17 of those points in the first half, helping the team open a five-point lead going into the second half. Sophomore guard, Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) went 4-5 from behind the arc for all of her 12 points.
The Red Foxes only trailed twice in the game, once at 18:10 and then again at 7:53. Marist took the lead for good when Sarah Tift (North Kingstown, RI) scored on a jumper making the score 19-17 with five minutes left in the first half. In the second half, the Red Foxes opened a 20-point lead with a minute to go, their largest of the season.
Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) led the team with eight assists, while Kristin Keller (Millbrook, NY) scored ten points for the second consecutive game.
The Red Foxes open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Friday, December 6, 2002 when they host Loyola College (MD.) at the McCann Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
