Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team dropped its second straight game, falling 86-77 to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent, Fairfield University, this evening at McCann Center. The Red Foxes fall to 3-3 overall on the year and 1-1 in MAAC play, while Fairfield improves to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in MAAC play.
Marist took a 52-39 lead with 16:11 remaining in the game on an Eric Sosler (Poughkeepsie, NY) three-pointer, but would not be able to hold the lead. The Stags went on a 7-2 run over the next 2:30 of the game and a 16-6 run, closing to within 58-55 with 10:37 remaining. Marist extended the lead to seven points, and led by that margin, 66-59 with 8:21 left, before the Stags scored six straight points, and then tied the game at 68-68 with 6:28 left. Over the final 6:28 Fairfield outscored the Red Foxes 20-9 to pull away for the victory.
Eric Sosler (Monroe, NY) scored a career-high 12 points on the night. David Bennett (Salt Lake City, UT) had 10 points and six assists, while Brandon Ellerbee (Plano, TX) added six assists and three steals.
Dewitt Maxwell led the Stags with 25 points, shooting 11-13 on the night and five boards. Five Fairfield players scored in double-digits including 13 points each from Nick Delfico and Kudjo Sogadzi.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, December 14, 2002, as it hosts Central Michigan in a 7:30 pm game.
