Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 66-63 victory over visiting College of the Holy Cross this evening at the McCann Center. Marist snaps a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-5, while Holy Cross has a two-game winning streak snapped, falling to 6-3 on the year.
Marist opened a 10-point lead, 58-48, with 3:59 remaining in the game on three made David Bennett (Salt Lake City, UT) free throws. Holy Cross scored the next seven points over a 2:17 span to close to within three points, 58-55. Marist scored four points to open a 62-55 lead with 1:12 remaining, which the Crusaders answered with five straight points of their own, sandwiched around three missed Red Fox free throws to get to within two points with :18 left in regulation. Marist would drain their final four free throws in that span, two each from Nick Eppehimer (Pottstown, PA) and Eric Siegrist (Poughkeepsie, NY) to seal the win.
Four Red Foxes scored in double-digits, led by the 17-point efforts of Dennis Young (Warrenton, GA) and Eppehimer. Eppehimer was 4-7 from three-point line, while Young connected on 7-10 free throws in the game. Eppehimer has scored in double-digits in each of the Red Foxes nine games this season, and scored 15 or more on eight occasions. Brandon Ellerbee (Plano, TX) score 11 points, on 3-4 shooting from behind the line, and had four assists in his 35 minutes of action. Bennett finished the game with 11 points as well, 4-4 from the free throw line, and four assists in 27 minutes before fouling out. Bennett has now connected on 18 consecutive free throws over the lats four games.
The Crusaders were led by the 18-point, nine-rebound effort of Patrick Whearty (Poughkeepsie, NY). Tim Szatko (Naperville, IL) had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Holy Cross.
Marist shot 45.8 (22-48) percent from the field, including 9-15 (60 %) from behind the three-point line. Holy Cross was 41.5 percent from the field (22-53) and were good on just 2-18 ((11.1 %) from behind the three-point line in the game. Holy Cross out rebounded the Red Foxes 36-29 in the game.
