Canisius Drops Marist 69-63 At McCann Center

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team had its four game win streak snapped, 69-63, by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College, this evening at the McCann Center.

Sean Kennedy (Northport, NY) recorded his second triple double of the year, scoring 14 points, while dishing out 10 assists and pulling down 10 rebounds. He recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound, 10 assist triple-double in the Red Foxes January 5th game versus Niagara.

The Red Foxes led by nine points, 55-46, with 8:37 remaining in the game, before the Griffs began to pick away at the lead, scoring the next five points, to close to 55-51, with 5:54 remaining in the contest. After a pair of Rick Smith (Bladensburg, MD) free throws, Toby Foster made a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around two more Smith free throws, to cut the lead to 59-57 with 3:12 left.

Nick Eppehimer (Pottstown, PA) scored with 2:33 left, and Matt Tullis (Orem, UT) scored with 1:57 remaining, but that would be the final points of the game. Canisius got a three-pointer from Brian Dux with 2:23 remaining, a field goal from Hodari Mallory with 1:37 left and then a pair of free throws from Dux with 1:14 to play, the Griffs first lead of the second half. Canisius converted 7-8 free throw opportunities in the final 1:14 to seal the victory.

Tullis led Marist with his 16 points and 11 rebounds, the second double-double of the year Tullis, both coming in games versus Canisius. Smith finished with 11 points, shooting 7-7 from the free throw line and had three steals. Kennedy had two steals and just two turnovers in the contest.

Marist shot 30.2 percent (19-63) from the field in the game, including just 27.8 percent in the second half. From the line Marist was 20-26, and connected on just 5-21 from behind the arc. Marist had only seven turnovers, to go along with seven blocks and nine steals.

Canisius shot 36.9 percent from the floor for the game, while knocking down 7-21 from behind the line. The Griffs were just 14-22 from the free throw line in the game, but held a 50-44 rebounding edge in the game. Canisius committed just 11 turnovers.

The Red Foxes fall to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the MAAC, while Canisius improves to 8-15 on the year and 5-9 in the MAAC, and earn the regular season sweep of Marist.

The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday, February 14th, when they travel to Bridgeport, CT, to take on Fairfield University. Game time is set for 8:00 pm.
