Final Stats
Elon, NC - The Marist College baseball team opened the 2002 season this afternoon, splitting a double-header with Elon (NC) College. The Red Foxes dropped the opener by a score of 13-6, but rebounded to earn a 6-4 win on the second game.
Sophomore Chris Homer earned his first save as a Red Fox, throwing the final 1.2 innings of the game, striking out two batters and allowing just one hit.
Offensively the Red Foxes were led by MAAC Pre-Season Player of the Year, Anthony Bocchino, who was 5-8 on the afternoon. In the nightcap, Bocchino was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Joey Salazar also provided an offensive punch for Marist, scoring three runs, going 2-8 and driving in a run.
Chuck Bechtel (0-1) started the season opener for the Red Foxes, giving up five runs, three earned, in his 5.1 innings worth of work. He struck out one batter and gave up just three hits on the afternoon. Marist led the opener 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. In that inning Elon scored seven runs on three hits and one Red Fox error.
The Red Foxes, 1-1 on the young season, will finish the three-game set with Elon on Sunday, in a 1:00 pm contest. Elon drops to 2-3 on the season with the double-header split.
