Elon, NC - The Marist College baseball team dropped the rubber match of a three-game set with Elon College, falling 7-5 this afternoon at Latham Park. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 1-2 on the season.
The Red Foxes led 2-1 entering the bottom half of the fifth-inning. Marist starter Kevin Ool (0-1) got the first out of the home portion of the fifth inning, before giving up a double, followed by back-to-back singles, scored the tying run, making the score 2-2. A sacrifice fly gave Elon the lead, as the Phoenix would tally two more runs in the inning, on an infield single and an error by the Marist centerfielder.
Marist would tally two runs in the top of the sixth as Anthony Bocchino led off with a single and scored when Mike Sidoti doubled to left center. Sidoti advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored when Jimmy Board ground out to second base. The Red Foxes closed to 5-4 in the seventh inning when Jimmy Willis scored on a Sidoti single, after leading off the inning with a single up the middle. Elon closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs, making the final 7-5.
Ool tossed 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits. He struck out eight batters on the day, while walking just two. Sidoti finished the day 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Bocchino was also 2-3, as was Matt Griffiths. Steve O'Sullivan was 2-4 with a run scored on the afternoon.
Marist will return to action next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3rd, when the Red Foxes travel to Liberty University for a three-game set.
