Red Foxes Rout Loyola, 85-50

Feb 3, 2002

Final Stats

BALTIMORE--Sean Kennedy scored seven of his game-high 17 points in a 15-0 Marist run early in the second half as the Red Foxes handed Loyola its worst loss in over seven years, an 85-50 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victory over the Greyhounds at Reitz Arena Sunday afternoon.

Marist (15-6, 9-3 MAAC), which stayed tied with Rider for first place in the MAAC standings, led 36-22 at halftime and 40-28 with 15:32 left before scoring the next 15 points to blow the game open. The Red Foxes then extended their lead to 30 points by the 8:44 mark in defeating the Greyhounds (3-18, 2-10 MAAC) for the second time in five days.

Damien Jenifer scored nine of his 11 points in the second half for Loyola, which suffered its worst defeat since an 86-51 loss at Xavier on December 3, 1994. The Greyhounds shot 31 percent from the field overall and 0-for-13 from three-point range. B.J. Davis, Loyola's second-leading scorer at 11.3 points per game, shot 0-for-9 from the field and went scoreless.

The Greyhounds led 9-5 early on before Marist scored 14 consecutive points in a five-minute span midway through the first half. A Lucious Jordan layup cut the Red Foxes' lead to 24-18 with 6:27 left in the half, but Marist used a 12-4 run after that to take a 14-point halftime lead.

Nick Eppehimer added 16 points and Brandon Ellerbee a career-high tying 14 off the bench for Marist, which shot 53 percent for the game and 61 percent (19-for-31) in the decisive second half. The Red Foxes also had eight blocks, four coming from Matt Tullis, who also scored 10 points, coming off of the bench for the third straight game.

The Red Foxes have won seven straight games over the Greyhounds, including a win Wednesday at the McCann Center, 67-53, in which the Red Foxes rebounded from a 29-24 halftime deficit to earn the victory.
