NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) - Sean Kennedy scored 21 points and Rick Smith added 17 as Marist beat Iona 79-71 Wednesday night for its fourth straight victory.
Smith knocked down a free throw with 8:43 remaining in the game to score the 1,000-point of his collegiate career, finishing the game with 1,004. He is the 19th player, the first since Alan Tomidy, to eclipse the mark during their Red Fox career.
Kennedy led all players with his eight rebounds as well as dishing out five assists on the night. Marist connected on eight three pointers, six in the first half, while allowing just two three's from the Gaels.
Nick Eppeheimer and David Bennett each added 14 points for the Red Foxes (16-6, 10-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who never trailed in the game.
Dyree Wilson had 23 points and Greg Jenkins added 21 for the Gaels (10-15, 7-7), who lost their third in a row.
Kennedy had 11 points and Smith added 10 as Marist took a 38-31 halftime lead.
Iona narrowed the margin to 40-39 on Maceo Wofford's basket 3:16 into the second half. But the Red Foxes went on to lead by as much as 72-61 on a basket by Bennett with 2:02 left in the game.
Marist will return to action on Monday, February 11th, when it hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius. Game time is set for 7:30 pm at the McCann Center.
