ALBANY, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament quarterfinal to Manhattan this evening, 70-54, in front of a crowd of 3,041, at the Pepsi Arena. The Red Foxes finish the 2001-02 season with an 11-17 overall record.
The Red Foxes trailed 29-15 at the intermission and scored the first five points of the second half to cut the lead to 29-20, with 18:31 remaining. After a 4-0 Jasper run over the next 1:12, Marist again cut the lead to nine points, 33-24, with 15:50 remaining in the contest. Manhattan scored six unanswered points to take a 39-24 lead with 13:51 left in the game, and would lead by no less than 11 points the reminder of the contest.
Nina Vecchio led the Red Foxes on the afternoon, pulling down 10 boards and scoring six points in her 40 minutes of play. Stephanie DelPreore was the team's leading rebounder, scoring 10 points, all in the second half, and recording three steals, a game-high. Maureen Magarity had eight points on the day, while Diesa Seidel had four rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes of action on the afternoon.
Marist shot 15.4 percent in the first half, connecting on just 4-26 from the field, led by the 3-4 effort of Sarah Tift, who finished with six points and two assists. Marist shot 26 percent from the floor for the game, and were 0-6 from behind the three-point line for the contest. Manhattan and Marist both finished the game with 39 rebounds, with Marist committing 17 turnovers, the Jaspers, 13.
Rosalee Mason had 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead Manhattan, who is now 18-10 on the year and will face the number two seed, St. Peter's in the MAAC Semifinal at 9:45 am, Saturday, March 2nd.
