Baseball Defeats Army 3-1 To Win Home Opener

March 13, 2002

Final Stats

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team captured its home opener with a 3-1 victory over visiting Army this afternoon on the McCann Field. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 5-4 on the year, while the Black Knights fall to 3-4.

Freshman pitcher Scott Chambers (Albany, NY), in his first collegiate start, pitched five innings, allowing one run, unearned on four hits to capture the first win of his career. He struck out four of the 19 batters he faced, while walking just one. Three other Red Fox hurlers tossed the final four innings, allowing just five hits, and one walk, while striking out five batters to preserve the win. Chris Homer (Jamesville, NY) tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his third save of the season.

The Red Foxes scored the game winning runs in a two-run fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY) hit a ground ball to second base which Army second baseman Miguel Gastellem (Tuscon, AZ) threw into foul ground, allowing O'Sullivan to score the game-winning run and advance Bocchino to third base. Bocchino stole third and scored on a single by Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY).

O'Sullivan, who went 2-3 on the day, scored the Red Foxes first run, in the home portion of the first-inning. He led off the inning with a triple to straight away centerfield and then scored when Joey Salazar (Houston, TX) ground out to second base, giving Marist the 1-0 lead.

Army scored its lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Nate Stone (Bellafonte, PA) singled and then appeared to have been caught stealing, but Josh Pardo (Perth Amboy, NJ) throw was errant, allowing Stone to advance to second. After a single, Stone would score when Schuyler Williamson (Pensacola, FL) ground into a double play, knotting the score at 1-1.

Ryan Kondratowicz (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) tossed 2.1 innings of relief for the Red Foxes, striking out three and allowing three hits. Kevin Shurtleff (Falls River, MA) came into a bases loaded situation in the eighth-inning and struck out the lone batter he faced, before giving way to Homer to seal the victory.

Scott Bramble (Rexburg, ID) took the loss in relief for the Black Knights, giving up two runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk, in two innings of work.

Marist will return to action on Friday, March 15th when it takes on Virginia Commonwealth in the first game of a three-game weekend set. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm on Friday.
