Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header from Canisius College, 9-1 and 16-3, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. Marist pitchers struck out 17 batters over the 16 innings of play on the day, walking just one opponent batter. The win is the 10th straight for Marist, not losing since March 30th.
The Red Foxes scored all the runs they would need in their first at-bat in the opening game. Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) singled through the left side on the first pitch offered in the inning, followed by a Joey Salazar (Houston, TX) single through the right side. After a groundout and a strike out, John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) singled to left field, driving in both O'Sullivan and Salazar for a 2-0 lead.
Kevin Shurtleff (Falls River, MA). Shurtleff tossed one inning, allowing a run on two hits, striking out one and walking none.
Marist scored first in the second game, again tallying a run in its first at-bat when McGorty drove in Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY). Canisius would take the lead in the third inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs, going up 2-1.
The Red Foxes answered in the bottom of the third inning, with two runs of their own, and then put the game away with an eight run fourth inning, adding four more in the fifth and the final run in the sixth inning. O'Sullivan had a two-run homerun, while Ben Cueto (Guttenburg, NJ) would double and score in his first at-bat of the third inning, and then reach when he was hit by a pitch.
Kevin Ool (Middletown, NY) earned the win in the nightcap, tossing six innings, striking out nine, walking none, and allowing the two unearned runs on five hits. Ool is now 5-2 on the year, as is Tracz, the winner in the first game.
O'Sullivan finished the double-header 5-9 with four RBI and three runs scored. McGorty was 4-4 with five RBI in the second game, finished with seven RBI, five hits and three runs scored. Jimmy Willis (Ft. Montgomery, NY) was 4-6 with four RBI and four runs scored, while Bocchino finished 4-8 with two runs and a RBI in the sweep.
Marist, which improves to 18-9 overall and 9-2 in MAAC play, had 26 hits on the day, 10 for extra bases, including the three doubles in game two by McGorty. The Red Foxes were also a perfect 4-4 on stolen base attempts.
Canisius, who falls to 1-19 on the year, 1-10 in MAAC play, will finish the series with Marist, Sunday, April 14th, in a 12:00 pm, nine-inning contest, on the McCann Baseball Field.
