Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College with a 9-3 win this afternoon at the McCann Baseball Field. The win, which improves the Red Foxes to 19-9 overall and 10-2 in MAAC play, is the 11th straight for the Red Foxes. Canisius falls to 1-20 overall and 1-11 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes took control of the game in the early innings, scoring three runs in their first at-bat. Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) led off the game with a walk and scored when Joey Salazar (Houston, TX) doubled to left center field. Salazar scored on a John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) groundout, and Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) doubled into the left field corner scoring Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY). Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY) lined a double down the left field line to start the third inning, stole third, and scored on a Sidoti groundout, giving Marist a 4-0 lead.
Chuck Bechtel (Royersford, PA) and three other Red Fox pitchers would need no more runs to earn the victory. Bechtel improved to 43, striking out seven, in four innings of three-hit, no run baseball. Ryan Kondratowicz (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) would toss two scoreless innings, striking out two, and Ken Catino (Milford, CT) would toss a scoreless eighth for Marist.
Bocchino would finish the afternoon 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Allen would drive in three runs, score one himself, as he went 2-5 on the day. Ben Cueto (Guttenburg, NJ) went 1-4 with two RBI for the Red Foxes, while O'Sullivan finished 2-3 with two runs.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, April 17th, as it hosts Lehigh in a 3:30 pm non-conference contest.
