Baseball Defeats Visiting Lehigh 9-5

April 17, 2002

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team won its 12th consecutive game with a 9-5 win over visiting Lehigh University this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes improve to 20-9 on the year, while the loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 20-13-1.

The Red Foxes, who score more runs, nine, then had hits, five, did most of their damage in the second inning. Marist totaled five runs in that inning, three coming off of a bases loaded triple, from Joey Salazar (Houston, TX). Marist scored the runs with the help of three walks, three wild pitches and three hit batters by the Lehigh pitching staff.

Marist would add three insurance runs in the fourth inning, again with just one base hit in the inning. Matt Griffiths (Los Altos, CA) was hit by a pitch, following a one out walk to Keith Brachold (Attleboro, Mass.). Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY), in the next at-bat, hit a three-run homerun to left field, extending his hitting streak to 12 games in the process.

Lehigh scored runs in the third and fourth innings, on solo homeruns by Eric Hoffman (Malvern, PA) and Jesse Novalis (Florham Park, NY). The Mountain Hawks added two more runs, one earned, in the top of the seventh, which Marist answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to make the final tally, 9-4.

Ryan Kondratowicz (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) improved to 3-0 on the year, tossing 5.2 innings of five hit, two run baseball. He struck out six batters on the day, while walking just one. Brad Cook (Binghamton, NY) and Mark Norton (Cornwall, NY) each tossed 1.2 innings in relief for Marist. Cook allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits, while striking out two, while Norton allowed only one hit during his 1.2 innings.

Kyle Stawicki (Branford, Conn.) took the loss for Lehigh, falling to 1-1. He allowed five runs, all earned, on no hits and three walks, while hitting three Marist batters. Lehigh pitching allowed nine runs, all earned, while walking five, hitting four batters and striking out just one.

The 12th straight win is a school record for the Red Foxes, snapping the nine-game win streak that Marist put up during the 2001 campaign. Marist returns to action on Thursday, April 18th, traveling to Hartford, Conn., to take on the Hawks of Hartford. The game, set for 3:30 pm, is a make-up for a game that was rained out on April 3rd.
