Marist College defeated Niagara, 14-3, in baseball action at John P. Bobo
Field on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Red Foxes a three-game sweep of
the series. The win also extended Marist's school record winning streak to
16 games. Niagara has lost eight straight to fall to 6-26 overall and 4-11
in the MAAC while Marist is now 24-9, 13-2.
Marist scored three runs in the first and five more in the second to take a
commanding 8-0 lead. A Mike Sidoti ground out drove home the opening run of
the game. John McCorty followed with a run-producing single and Tim Allen's
sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Allen had a two-run double in Marist's five-run
second inning. Niagara got on the board in the bottom of the second when
Miguel Iglesias drove home Josh McCurdy with an RBI double to left. Marist
added three runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and a run in the sixth
to make it 13-1. Niagara scored twice in the sixth on a Tim Fitzgerald
double and a Reed Eastley single. The Red Foxes added a run in the ninth to
complete the scoring.
Mike Sidoti was 3-6 with five RBI to pace the Marist attack. Anthony
Bocchino, who was 8-13 in the series, was 1-3 with three walks and four runs
scored. Niagara pitcher Sean Haggerty took the loss. Relief pitcher Chris
Cerchie retired all six batters he faced. Chuck Bechtel allowed three
earned runs in six innings for the win, while Brad Cook pitched the final
three innings for the save.
