Baseball Runs Win Streak To 19 Games with 6-1, 3-0 Sweep Of Manhattan

April 27, 2002

Final Stats

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header from Manhattan College, 6-1 and 4-0, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field, running its win streak to 19 consecutive games. Starting pitcher Kevin Ool (Middletown, NY) improved to 7-2 on the year as he tossed the Red Foxes first shutout of the year in the night cap.

Marist senior Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) kept his hit streak alive, going 3-5 in the first game and 1-3 in the nightcap. He has now recorded a base hit in each of the Red Foxes last 19 games.

Ool tossed a complete game, five-hit shutout in the nightcap, striking out six batters and walking none. The Red Foxes gave him all the support he would need in the second inning, when Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) ground a two-out single through the right side. He advanced on a walk to the next batter, and when a groundball by Keith Brachold (Attleboro, Mass.) was fumbled by the Manhattan second baseman, Allen would score. Marist added two run sin the second inning and an insurance run in the home half of the sixth to complete the scoring.

The opener was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Red Foxes struck for three runs. O'Sullivan led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a ground out. Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY) followed with a double to right center, scoring O'Sullivan, and scored when Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY) singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw to the plate. Sidoti would scored two batters later on an Allen single.

The Red Foxes added a run in the fifth when Bocchino led off with a double, advanced to third on a Sidoti groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly from Allen. Marist rounded out the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning, as Brachold doubled and scored on a Matt Griffiths (Los Altos, CA) single. Bocchino would deliver a bases loaded sacrifice fly three batters later to score Griffiths.

Mark Norton (Cornwall, NY) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out three and giving up a solo homerun in the ninth to Wendell Anderson (East Hartford, Conn.).

O'Sullivan was 4-8 with two runs on the afternoon, while Bocchino finished the day 2-4 with three runs, two RBI and two doubles. Sidoti finished with three RBI and two base hits.

Marist, which improved to 27-9 overall and 15-2 in the MAAC, will look for its 20th straight win, and a three game sweep of Manhattan (20-18; 7-10) in a nine-inning game scheduled for noon on Sunday, April 28th.
