Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header from Saint Peter's College, 21-5 and 9-1, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. Marist senior Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) tied an NCAA record for triples in an inning and in a single game.
With the Red Foxes trailing 1-0 in the first inning of the first game, O'Sullivan led off the Red Fox attack with a triple to left field. The Red Foxes would send 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, as they scored nine runs. O'Sullivan hit as the 10th batter of the inning and tripled again, this time to center field, becoming the sixth player in NCAA history to record two triples in a single game. He would tie the single game record when he tripled again in the seventh inning, this time to left center field.
Marist would knock out 25 hits in the first game of the double header, scoring 21 runs on the day, the most since putting up that number in a game against St. Francis (NY), April 12, 2001. The Red Foxes scored nine runs in the first, five in the second and the seventh and one run in each the third and fourth innings, while committing no errors.
The second game saw Marist score nine runs on 12 hits. With the Red Foxes leading 4-0 entering the fifth, after scoring two runs in the second and the third inning, Marist would score four runs with two outs in the home half of the inning.
Kevin Ool (Middletown, NY) would earn the victory in the second game, tossing the complete game three hitter. Ool struck out five in the game, while allowing just one unearned run and walking one batter. Ryan Kondratowicz (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was the benefactor of the offensive barrage in game one, improving to 2-0, tossing six innings, striking out six and allowing five runs. Brad Cook (Binghamton, NY) tossed two innings and George Heath (Henrietta, NY) tossed the ninth to complete the victory, each striking out to batters.
O'Sullivan went 6-10, with four triples, four runs scored and two RBI on the afternoon. He is the first player since April 14, 1999 to hit two triples in the same inning. Jimmy Willis (Ft. Montgomery, NY) had nine RBI on the day, six in game, one, as he went 3-6 with a home run and two doubles.
Marist finished the day with 37 base hits, 14 of them going for extra bases, including the inside the park homerun of Matt Griffiths (Los Altos, CA). Griffiths finished the double-header 4-9 with five runs scored and three RBI.
Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) was 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scored in the first game. John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) was 3-3 with two runs scored in the opener, while Keith Brachold (Attleboro, MA) was 3-5 in the opener as well.
The Red Foxes improve to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in MAAC play with the wins. St. Peter's falls to 6-11 on the year and is not 3-5 in MAAC play. The two teams will meet on Sunday, April 7th, at 12:00 pm as Marist looks to complete the three-game sweep.
