Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team won its seventh consecutive game with a 5-3 victory over visiting Monmouth University this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes improve to 15-9 on the year, while the loss drops the Hawks to 13-13.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second when Joey Salazar (Houston, TX) pushed a bunt past the Monmouth pitcher, Brian Driber. In the next at-bat Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY) tripled down the right field line, tying the score at 3-3. Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Bocchino and gave Marist a 4-3 lead. Jimmy Willis (Ft. Montgomery, NY) would give the Red Foxes an insurance run in the eighth inning with a homerun to left field.
Marist starting pitcher Scott Chambers (Albany, NY) would improve to 2-0 on the year, as he tossed the first six innings for the Red Foxes, giving up all three runs, just two earned. He struck out five batters, while walking four and allowing six base hits. Five Marist pitchers scattered nine hits on the day, while striking out nine Hawk batters. Chris Homer (Jamesville, NY) pitched the ninth, striking out three, to earn his league leading seventh save of the season.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth-inning when Frank Pilitowski drove home Jay Law. Bocchino would answer that run with a homerun to left field, with two out, in the bottom of the fourth. Monmouth scored two runs in the top of the sixth, before the Marist rally.
Driber fell to 0-1 on the year, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits and walking one. He struck out two batters. Andrew Chiappano tossed the final 1.2 inning, giving up two hits, and a run, on the Willis homer.
Bocchino finished the day 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Sidoti and Willis each had RBI on the day. O'Sullivan was 2-4, as was Willis, each scoring a run in the game.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, April 10th, when it travels to West Point, NY, to take on Army, at 3:30 pm. The Red Foxes defeated the Black Knights 3-1 on March 9th at the McCann Baseball Field. Marist will return home this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14th, to host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Canisius for three games. First pitch on both days is 12:00 pm, with a double-header being played on Saturday. The Red Foxes are 7-2 in MAAC play, in second place.
