Staten Island, NY - The Marist College baseball team hit eight homeruns in defeating host Wagner 19-6 this afternoon in Staten Island, NY. The Red Foxes improve to 29-10 on the year, while Wagner drops to 8-35.
Marist knocked out 20 hits on the afternoon, 40 percent of them going out of the park for homeruns. Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY) in his return to his home borough, had two, as did Anthony Bocchino (Brooklyn, NY). Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY), Keith Brachold (Attleboro, Mass.), John McGorty (West Sayville, NY)Steve O'Sullivan (Bronx, NY) also all had homeruns in the victory. The Red Foxes had 10 extra base hits on the day, with Joey Salazar (Houston, TX) and Brachold both doubling in the win.
Marist started the game with five runs on four hits in the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back homeruns from Sidoti, a three run shot, and Brachold, a solo shot. After a walk to Allen, McGorty hit a two-run homer, the third of the inning. Bocchino hit his first of the game to account for the Red Foxes lone run in the second, and drove in the Red Foxes fourth inning run, scoring O'Sullivan. Allen homered in the fifth as Marist scored four runs, and Bocchino hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.
The Red Foxes blew the game open in the eighth-inning, scoring seven runs in the frame, with two homeruns. O'Sullivan hit his first of the day and Sidoti hit his second, both three run homeruns, accounting for two of the six hits in the inning.
Brad Cook (Binghamton, NY) pitched three innings in relief of starter Ken Catino (Milford, Conn.), in earning the win. Cook, 2-0 on the year, did not allow a run, striking out three and walking none. Catino gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits, in his four innings of work. Marist pitching struck out eight batters on the day, while walking only three and giving up just eight hits.
Bocchino finished the game 4-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Sidoti was 2-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. O'Sullivan had three RBI and three runs scored, as did Allen. McGorty finished with two RBI, to runs scored and three base hits.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, May 4th, in Syracuse, NY with a double-header against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe LeMoyne. The Red Foxes are 15-3 in league play, the Dolphins are 16-2, as the teams meet for a three-game set. A single game will be played on Sunday, with competition beginning at noon on both days.
