Fishkill, NY--Kevin Ool struck out nine batters, becoming the all-time strikeout leader in Marist College baseball history as he earned the victory in the Red Foxes 7-3 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Iona College this evening at Dutchess County Stadium in Fishkill, NY. Ool now has 224 career strikeouts and improves to 9-3 on the year.
Ool tossed 7.2 innings of four hit baseball, and struck out the final two batters in the first inning of the game, tying and breaking the former school record of 216. He would allow just two runs over his innings of work, as Marist clinched the MAAC Regular season title, combined with the Siena College sweep of LeMoyne. Chris Homer tossed the final 1.1 innings, entering the game with two on and two out in the eighth, the scored 5-2 in favor of the Red Foxes and two runners on, to pick up his 11th save of the year. Homer had two strikeouts while walking none, and allowing one hit in the effort.
Marist knocked out 16 hits, including three homeruns. John McGorty started the scoring in the third inning as he launched his first ever at -bat at Dutchess Stadium over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead. Steve O'Sullivan would homer later in the inning, with a runner on base, to left center, to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead. Jimmy Willis homered to lead off the eighth inning to give the Red Foxes a 6-2 lead.
Anthony Bocchino led the Red Foxes with a 3-5 and two RBI evening. McGorty and Willis were both 2-4 with an RBI and run scored in the Marist win over Iona. Matt Griffiths touched the plate for three of the seven Marist runs, going 1-3 on the day.
Marist will host Iona in a twi-night double-header at Dutchess Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm on Friday. The rain makeup day for the games will be Sunday, May 19th, as Saturday is Graduation Day for both institutions.
