Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist College released its 2002 fall sports schedules this afternoon and look forward to one of the most competitive seasons in the schools history. Adding to the excitement of the 2002 Fall schedule will be the addition of permanent lights on Leoniodiff Field, enabling the men's and women's soccer teams to continue playing under the lights during the season. The Red Foxes have an exciting non-conference slate, as well as playing their competitive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foes.
Second year volleyball coach Sarah Watters and her squad will open play at the University of Albany Tournament, August 31st, taking on the host and Lafayatte College. The home portion of the schedule kicks off on September 10th when Marist welcomes Big East Conference member St. John's for a 5:00 pm contest. The Marist Invitational will take play September 20-21st as the Red Foxes host five matches each day with LaSalle, Army, Hartford and Akron participating. MAAC play begins on October 2ndwhen Siena visits the McCann Center, and concludes when defending league champion Fairfield comes to Poughkeepsie on November 8th. The MAAC Tournament will be played in Orlando, FL at The Disney Sports Complex, November 16-20th.
Megan McGonagle will lead the women's soccer team into action, breaking in the new lights on Leonidoff Field, hosting Long Island University on August 21st at 7:00 pm. The defending MAAC Regular Season Champions will begin defense of the conference crown on October 11th, hosting Iona under the lights on Leonidoff Field. October 13th brings a home meeting with perennial MAAC power Fairfield and October 27th marks a rematch of the 2001 MAAC Championship game versus Loyola. The Red Foxes will play host to the four-team conference tournament, November 8th and 10th. The non-conference schedule is equaling as challenging, with St. Bonaventure, Providence, Bucknell and Army visiting Leonidoff Field. Marist will play at Navy, as well as taking on Vermont, Maine, Hofstra and Cornell, on the road.
The men's soccer team, under the direction of head coach Bobby Herodes will open its 2002 campaign on September 1st, hosting Albany under the lights on Leonidoff Field. MAAC play begins ON October 11th when the Red Foxes travel to Iona. October 13th brings a road meeting with nationally ranked MAAC power Fairfield, and October 27th is a road match-up with Loyola, another nationally ranked MAAC opponent. The home MAAC opener is October 18th, under the lights, against St. Peter's. The visit of PAC-10 Conference member Oregon State on September 20th, highlights the home non-conference schedule. Hofstra, and Binghamton will also come to the Poughkeepsie campus. Marist will take to the road to play Columbia, Fordham, Stony Brook and Oneonta this fall.
The men's and women's cross country teams will officially open their seasons on September 7th at the Stony Brook Invitational. Men's coach Phil Kelly will then run their squads at the Central Connecticut State Invitational on September 21st, in preparation for the team's first-ever showing at the Metropolitan Championship, October 4th at Van Cortlandt Park. The team's return to Van Cortlandt for the MAAC Championship on November 1st, the NCAA Northeast Regional on October 16th and the IC4A/ECAC Championship on November 23rd.
