Marist Volleyball Opens Season With Split At Albany Tournament

Albany, NY - The 2002 season started on a high note for the Marist College women's volleyball team, defeating Lafayette 3-0 (33-31, 30-24, 30-27) in the second match of the Albany Tournament. Marist finished second in the tournament, after falling 3-1 (30-17, 28-30, 30-13, 30-23) to the host University of Albany.

In the opener the Red Foxes received strong performances from the entire cast, hitting .203 across the three-game sweep of the Leopards. Sophomore Aline dos Santos (Sao Paolo, Brazil) led the way with her match-high 15 kills, to go along with nine digs. Rookie Michelle Turley (Stevensville, MI) posted a match-high 10 digs, as well as adding eight kills. Christina Brozek (Fair Lawn, NJ) finished the win with 10 kills and four solo blocks. Rookie Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, CA) had a team-high 17 assists, while sophomore Ryann Gillen (Paola, KS) had 15 assists in the match.

Brozek led the Red Foxes with 10 kills, hitting .300 in the nightcap, but it was not enough to best the 2-0 Great Danes. Albany hit .282 in the match, holding Marist to .059. Gillen had 15 assists and four kills in the loss.

On the day, dos Santos finished with 24 kills and 14 digs. Turley finished her first day of collegiate volleyball with 16 digs and 14 kills. Brozek closed the opening day performance with 20 kills, seven blocks and five digs.

The Red Foxes (1-1) will return to action Friday and Saturday, September 6-7th at the Hartford Tournament, in Hartford, Conn.
