Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College football team improved to 2-0 on the year, with a 28-0 win over visiting Canisius College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Football League action, this evening in front of 2,278 on Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes open a season at 2-0 for the first time since the 1993 season.
The Red Foxes defense was solid once again in the win, earning the team's first shutout since the 2000 season. Marist held the Griffs (0-2; 0-2) to just 83 total offensive yards in the game, with just 31 yards coming on the ground. The Red Foxes had four interceptions in the game, with two coming from Ian Jackson (Manalapan, NJ). Marist also sacked the Griffs quarterbacks four times, eight on the year, with Robert Thompson (Paramus, NJ) recording three of those sacks, for 31 lost yards for Canisus.
The Marist offense got off to a sluggish start, with Alfredo Riullano (Callicoon, NY) giving the Red Foxes all the points they would need with 3:30 left in the first half, as he scored from 15 yards out. Riullano would dominate the third quarter, as he would tally two more touchdowns for Marist. He made it 13-0 with an eight yard run with 5:38 left in the quarter, and then made is 20-0 with a five yard run with 17 second remaining in the stanza. Riullano would finish with 20 carries and 112 yards.
Senior Chris Price would put the finishing touches on the outing for Marist as he crossed the goal line with 10:52 in the game, from three yards out, to make the score 27-0. For the second straight game, Price rushed for over 160 yards, finishing with 162 on the night, on 21 carries, along with the touchdown. Price and Riullano have combined for eight touchdowns in the first two games of the year, and have rushed for a combined 564 yards, both going over the century mark in the first two games.
The Red Foxes, now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play, will return to action on Saturday, September 21st, when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA to take on Duquesne in a 1:30 pm game.
