Marist's Dave Magarity Records 300th Career Win In 83-78 Victory Over Canisius

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Canisius 83-78 tonight at the McCann Center. The victory was Red Foxes head coach Dave Magarity's 300th of his coaching career. The Red Foxes improve to 6-8 on the season, with a 2-3 record in MAAC play. Canisius falls to 5-8, with a 1-3 record in the conference.

The Red Foxes led 16-11 with 14:56 to play in the first half, highlighted by three three-pointers from Brandon Ellerbee (Plano, TX). Marist increased the advantage to 26-18 at 9:40 on a basket by Nick Eppehimer before the Golden Griffins went on a 12-3 run in the next two minutes to take a 30-29 lead.

Canisius was up 39-36 with 3:15 to play in the first half until the Red Foxes went on a 9-0 run to make it 45-39 with 36 seconds left in the half.

Marist opened the second half shooting the ball well, increasing their lead to 57-45 with 15:48 to play. Canisius responded with a 7-0 run in the next two minutes to make it 57-52.

The two teams traded baskets over the next 10 minutes of regulation, before the Golden Griffins narrowed the lead to 71-70 with 3:50 left in the game. The Red Foxes answered as Nick Eppehimer (Pottstown, PA) and Dennis Young (Warrenton, GA) each hit a pair of free throws to make it a 75-72 lead. Young's lay-up with 2:05 to play sealed the victory.

Young led Marist with a career-high 22 points, on 9-12 shooting, to go along with 10 rebounds. Eppehimer finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, while going 3-5 from behind the arc. Ellerbee and Eric Siegrist (Poughkeepsie, NY) also reached double figures in scoring, with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Kevin Downey led Canisius with 20 points, while Hodari Mallory added 19 points.

The Red Foxes return to action on Friday, January 17, when they travel to Baltimore, MD to face Loyola at 7:00 p.m.
