Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team defeated Rider University 88-78 this evening at the McCann Center, the most points scored by the Red Foxes this season. The Red Foxes are now 7-7 on the season, and 3-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Rider went on an 8-0 run to open the game, but the Red Foxes countered with 11 unanswered points. Marist took the lead for good when freshman Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, NY) hit a three-point shot, making the score 23-20 with 7:14 left in the first half. Vilardi finished the night with a career-high 21 points, going 4-7 from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Laura Whitney (Warminster, PA) provided the Red Foxes what they needed off the bench. Whitney grabbed six boards, handed out three assists, and recorded four steals on the night.
Junior forward Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) notched her tenth career double-double, scoring 20 points, while grabbing 12 rebounds. Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) and Kerry Sullivan (Crompond, NY) also finished in double digits with 15 and 10, respectively.
The Red Foxes shot 43.4 percent from the field, while grabbing a total of 58 rebounds, a season-high. Other season highs included assists with 23 and steals with 15.
Marist returns to action Saturday, January 18th, when they travel to St. Peter's in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at the Yanitelli Center. The Red Foxes return home January 24th when they host Canisius at 7:00 p.m. in the McCann Center.
