Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team defeated the Niagara University Purple Eagles 64-51 this afternoon at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes never game up the lead, with Niagara only coming within one point once. Marist improves to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, while Niagara drops to 12-6 on the season and 6-3 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes went on a 9-0 run to open the game and never looked back, going up as much as 15 in the second half. Marist shot 42 percent for the game, while Niagara shot 28.6 percent.
Junior forward, Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) led all scorers with 15 points, while grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore Laura Whitney (Warminster, PA) came off the bench and contributed ten points, a new career-high, while leading all players in rebounds with seven, another career-high. Whitney also recorded three steals for the Red Foxes. Freshman guard, Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, NY) started her third consecutive game, recording 10 points and six rebounds. Vilardi also handed out four assists, a new career-high.
Marist defense held Niagara's leading scorer Eva Cunningham to 11 points, while Jessica Kemp and Colleen Toetz recorded 12 and 10, respectively.
The Red Foxes return to action Friday, January 31st, when they host Iona at the McCann Center at 7:00 p.m.
