Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team defeated the Iona College Gaels 68-56 this evening at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes took the season series 2-0, beating the Gaels 58-45 at the Mulcahy Center on January 9th. Marist improves to 9-9 on the season, while posting a 5-4 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC.)
For the second consecutive game the Red Foxes jumped out to a lead and never let go. Marist led as much as 18 points in the first half, and never let Iona get closer than five in the second.
The Red Foxes bench scored almost half of the teams 68 points, in large part to junior Kerry Sullivan (Crompond, NY) recording 18 points. Sullivan posted her first career double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with her point total.
Junior guard Vicki Wancel (Flushing, NY) handed out a career-high six assists, while Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) recorded a season-high in points with 12, while tying her career-high in steals with four.
Sheena Howard led Iona in points with 17, while Trinette Gooding led the team in rebounds with seven. The Gaels leading scorer, Michelle Fahy was held to seven points by the Marist defense.
The Red Foxes shot 33.3 percent from the field, while the Gaels shot 32.8 percent.
Marist returns to action Sunday, February 2nd, when they travel to Loyola College to take on the Greyhounds at Reitz Arena in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
