Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College football team scored two touchdowns in the final 1:40 of play to rally for a 33-29 win over visiting Central Connecticut State University, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field.
James Luft went 9-9 in the Red Foxes final two drives to lead Marist back from a 29-20 deficit with 3:21 remaining. In the first drive he was 5-5, finding Tim Traynor from 14-yards out on a wide receiver screen, making the score 29-26. Gary Flynn recovered the on-side kick for the Red Foxes and Luft went 4-4 in the final drive. The game-winning touchdown was again to Traynor, on the same wide receiver screen, this time from the 15-yard line.
Traynor, a sophomore, made three catches on the afternoon for the Red Foxes, all touchdowns, a single-game school record, going for 63 total yards.
CCSU, 3-8 overall, scored first and built a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Alfredo Riullano closed that to 15-13 with a three-yard run in the second quarter. Marist took the lead 2:58 into the third quarter on Traynor's first touchdown, a 34-yard strike from Brad McGuire. CCSU tallied the next two scores, 8:19 left in the game and at 3:28 left in the game, to set up the Marist rally.
The Red Foxes received strong efforts from its senior class, which was honored prior to their final collegiate game. McGuire threw two touchdown passes, going 7-11 for 123 yards in his first-ever collegiate start. Riullano had 41 yards rushing and two touchdowns, one receiving. James McQueen had his best game as a Red Fox as he carried the ball 22 times for 114 yards.
Linebacker John Healy eclipsed 100 tackles for the year, as he finished his career with 11 in the game, and 276 tackles for his career. Barry 'Huck' Correia, a rookie, finished with 10 tackles in the contest.
Scott Dolch finished the game 16-30 for 247 yards and three touchdowns for CCSU. He found Mike Malone five times, for two touchdowns and 66 yards. Brian Frederick finished with three catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Cory Harge led the Blue Devils in rushing with 69 yards on 14 carries.
