PHILADELPHIA, PA -- After a back and forth battle, the Marist College women's basketball team was unable to hang on for the victory, falling to Ivy League rival University of Pennsylvania tonight 86-78 at the Palestra.
Penn (2-2) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to begin the game, but Marist (1-2) stormed back with a 12-3 run of its own to tie the score with 13 minutes remaining in the half. The Quakers answered, taking its largest lead of the game, 37-26, with 3:18 left before the break. The Red Foxes made another run to close out the first half, scoring 13 unanswered points and took a 39-37 lead into the locker room.
After trading baskets over the first five minutes of the second half, the Quakers regained the lead on a Jewel Clark field goal, bringing the score to 54-52. The Red Foxes continued to fight back creating eight lead changes over the next five minutes, but the Quakers pulled ahead to stay on a Joey Rhoads three-pointer at the 9:13 mark.
Marist had four players in double figures with senior Stephanie Del Preore
leading the way with 21 points, including her 800th career point. She also added six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Maureen Magarity scored 18, while pulling down five boards and dishing out five assists. Junior Kristin Keller
continued to play well, scoring 12 on 6-10 shooting and registering a team-high seven rebounds. Laura Whitney dropped in 11 points and handed out four assists. For Penn, Clark finished the game as high-scorer with 27 points, six assists and six rebounds.
As a team, Marist shot .479 from the floor while Penn shot .596 and .688 from beyond the arc. The Red Foxes outscored the Quakers in the paint 44-22 and outrebounded the Quakers 33-29.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Friday, December 5th at 7:00pm as they open MAAC play against Canisius.
