BOSTON (AP) - Marcus Barnes hit a running layup with 2.4 seconds left to
lead Northeastern past Marist 59-57 Sunday afternoon and help snap the Huskies'
two-game losing streak.
Brandon Ellerbee, who scored a career-high 29 points on 11-of-13 shooting,
including 7-of-9 from 3-point range, brought Marist (1-6) even with 11 seconds
left with a 3-pointer from 25 feet out. Barnes drove down the court on
Northeastern's (4-4) ensuing possession and floated a runner off the glass for
the winning basket.
Jared Jordan's desperation heave from half-court bounced off the rim as time
expired.
Down by four with 36 seconds left, Ellerbee pulled the Red Foxes to 55-54
with a 3-pointer. Northeastern kept Marist's hopes alive by converting just
2-of-4 free throws down the stretch.
Marist led the entire first half until Sylbrin Robinson gave Northeastern a
35-34 lead with 12:28 left. The lead changed hands five times before the
Huskies took their biggest lead, 51-46, with 4:30 left as Marcus Barnes and
Wilson hit 3-pointers on successive possessions. Ellerbee, brought Marist to
51-51 with 2:31 remaining on a 3-pointer and a layup.
Ellerbee scored Marist's final 15 points.
Javorie Wilson led the way for the Huskies with 23 points and eight
rebounds. Barnes, Northeastern's leading scorer, finished with 14 points but
shot just 4-of-19 from the field. Will McClurkin scored 10 points for the Red
Foxes.
