Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team dropped its third straight game, falling 62-57 to visiting Vermont this afternoon at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes fall to 1-7 overall while the Catamounts improve to 3-4.
The Red Foxes led 37-29 with 16:37 remaining in the game before the Catamounts went on a 12-3 run over the next 6:00 to take a 41-40 lead. The next 2:50 saw six lead changes and two ties, before the Catamounts took the lead for good 47-46 with 7:59 left in the game. Marist closed to within three points on four occasions in the final 5:13 but could get no closer.
The Catamounts, led by the 25 points of Taylor Coppenrath, shot 59.1 percent (13-22) in the second half, finishing the game at 46.2 percent from the field. Marist connected on only 34.3 percent (12-25) from the field in the second half, after hitting 12-29 (41.4%) in the first-half of play. T.J. Sorrentine was the only other Catamount in double-figures, hitting for 18 points, while Scotty Jones led all players with 10 rebounds.
Will McClurkin was the Red Foxes leading scorer on the day, shooting 9-16 to finish with 18 points, as well as five boards. Carl Hood was the only other Red Fox in double figures with 11 points. Pierre Monagan finished with a solid line of seven points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Brandon Ellerbee dished out a game-high six assists to go along with six points.
Marist will take to the road for a Tuesday match-up against Georgia Tech at 2:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets, who improved to 10-0 on Sunday with a 79-66 win over St. John's, are ranked fifth in the December 15th AP Poll and sixth in the last ESPN/USA Today Poll. Georgia Tech received six first place votes in the AP poll and three in the ESPN/USA Today poll.
