POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Marist College (4-3, 2-0 MAAC) women's basketball team has its three-game winning streak snapped as they fell to number 23-ranked Auburn 63-47 this afternoon at the McCann Center.
The Red Foxes came out strong in first half, taking quick 7-3 lead. Marist continued the charge increasing their lead to 21-14 lead on a three-pointer by Nina Vecchio midway through the period. With 9:03 remaining, Auburn (9-2) began an 8-0 run, pulling them ahead 22-21. Junior Megan Vetter hit a three to regain the lead, but the Tigers' answered with a layup by Natasha Brackett. The Tigers extended their lead to four points as Nancy Derrick hit a three-point shot to close the first half, 31-27.
In the second half, Marist and Auburn exchanged baskets in the opening minutes, but with just under seven minutes remaining, Aurburn hit back-to-back threes, increasing the score to 55-41. The Tigers continued their offensive output going up by as much as 17 points with 2:53 remaining.
The Tigers had three players in double figures, two of which recorded double-doubles. Le'Coe Willingham netted 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while center Mandisa Stevenson tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Nicole Louden chipped in with 13 points. Brackett finished the night with seven points.
For Marist, junior Laura Whitney led the way for Marist with 16 points. Senior Maureen Magarity was also in double figures, scoring 11 points, including her 600th career point. Freshman Kristin Hein played well, scoring a season-high five points and registering three rebounds, two steals and an assist in 14 minutes of action.
The Red Foxes, who had the four-game home winning streak snapped, will be back in action on December 27th as they face host Tulane at the Double Tree Classic in New Orleans.
