Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College (1-4; 1-0 MAAC) men's basketball team earned its first win of the season defeating Siena College (3-2; 0-1 MAAC) 67-65 this evening in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes are now 7-0 in conference openers since joining the league for the 1997-98 campaign.
With 18 seconds remaining in the game, freshman Jared Jordan controlled a missed jumper by Siena's Tommy Mitchell. Jordan then fed Brandon Ellerbee at mid-court for a break away lay-up, putting the Red Foxes up 67-63. Tommy Mitchell hit a lay-up to cut the lead to 67-65 with 1.3 seconds on the clock and after a pair of missed free throws by Ellerbee, the Saints were unable to get off a desperation three pointer.
Marist had four Red Foxes in double-figures, with junior Will McClurkin leading the way with a season-high 19 points on 8-16 shooting from the field. Pierre Monagan chipped in with 12 points, seven boards, six assists and a steal. Senior Chris Handy added 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while sophomore Carl Hood registered 11 points and five boards.
The Red Foxes committed only 10 turnovers in the game, with four in the second half. Siena turned the ball over 15 times. The Red Foxes were consistent throughout the contest, shooting 41.9 percent from the field, 40.6 percent in the first half and 43.4 percent in the second half. The Saints, who won the battle on the boards 41-36, shot 51.7 percent in the second half, finishing at 41.7 percent for the game.
Jordan, a freshman, played 22 minutes off of the bench, scoring four points, dishing out four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Ellerbee ended the game with nine points, four assists, and three rebounds.
The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday, December 9th, as they continue MAAC play, traveling the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT, to take on the Fairfield Stags. Game time is 7:30 pm and it can be heard on WKIP 1450AM and the internet at www.GoRedFoxes.com.
