POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Marist College women's basketball team (2-2, 1-0) won their first game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season, downing Canisius College (2-2, 0-1), 78-57 this evening at the McCann Center.
The Red Foxes opened the game on a 19-7 run behind junior Laura Whitney. The guard hit her first seven shots of the game and scored 22 points in the first half. Whitney finished her career night with 26 points on 10-14 shooting from the floor, two assists and a steal.
After taking a comfortable 51-27 lead into half, Marist continued the offensive surge well into the second period Senior Kerry Sullivan gave the Red Foxes a 30-point lead, their largest of the night, on a jumper with 3:49 remaining in the second.
Each of the Red Foxes had a solid night, including a 21-point performance from the bench. Senior Maureen Magarity scored 18 points and recorded seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Stephanie Del Preore pulled down 11 boards and chipped in with eight points, while guard Nina Vecchio dished out a season-high eight assists.
Senior Kerry Sullivan added five points and three rebounds off-the-bench for Marist. Freshman Shannon Minter scored her first collegiate points, tallying three in six minutes of action
Canisius' Becky Zak scored 14 points for the Golden Griffins, while Lonnie Brown added 14 points and nine rebounds. Guard Jenel Stevens was also in double-figures scoring 13 for the Griffs.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Sunday, December 7th at 2:00pm as conference rival Niagara visits the McCann Center
