Red Foxes Stumble Against Stags

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Oscar Garcia scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Fairfield past Marist, 67-56, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Deng Gai added 12 points, and Ajou Deng had eight for the Stags (15-8, 11-3), who assured themselves of their first winning season since 1995-96.

Marist (9-14, 5-9) was led by Chris Handy's 12 points and 14 rebounds and Nick Eppehimer's 12 points.

The Stags surged to a 41-21 halftime lead on the strength of 68.4 percent shooting. Marist pulled as close as 50-40 at the 10:58 mark of the second half before Fairfield assembled a 10-0 run to open the game.

Marist shot 32.2 percent from the field and was outrebounded 39-35.

Nine different players scored for Fairfield, which never trailed in the game. The Stags' biggest lead was 40-17 on a DeWitt Maxwell layup with 1:47 remaining in the first half.

The Stags were 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the foul line. The Red Foxes were 12-of-18 (66.7 percent).
