Women's Basketball Escapes Second Half Surge By Canisius For 71-68 Victory

Buffalo, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team was outscored 42-28 in the second half, but managed to hang on for a 71-68 win over Canisius at the Koessler Center on Sunday. The Red Foxes snapped a three-game losing streak and improve their record to 11-12, with a 7-7 record in MAAC play.

The seven wins in conference play tie last year's total for the most wins in MAAC play since joining in 1997, while the 11 wins also match last year's season total.

The Red Foxes dominated the first half of play and took a 43-26 lead into the locker room. Marist shot 50 percent from the field and was 6-11 from behind the arc in the first twenty minutes of action.

Canisius (11-12, 6-8) came out firing to open up the second half, going on a 21-4 run to tie the game at 47-47 with 12:32 left in regulation, but was not enough as the Red Foxes hung on for the victory.

Marist shot 47 percent from the field for the game, and was 8-16 from three-point range, while Canisius shot 40 percent.

Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) led the Red Foxes with 18 points, on 8-9 shooting, and collected five rebounds and three steals. Kerry Sullivan (Crompond, NY) had her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) added 10 points and five assists.

Jes Butler led Canisius with 18 points, on 8-8 shooting, while Lonnie Brown and Cheryl Wittlieb had 11 points apiece. Jenel Stevens, the current leading scorer in the MAAC, was held to six points on 2-14 shooting, and pulled down 14 rebounds.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, February 19th, when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on Rider at 7:00 p.m.
