Norfolk, VA --Head baseball coach Jim Tyrrell won his first game at the helm of the Red Foxes, as his charges defeated Old Dominion this afternoon, 8-1. Chuck Bechtel (1-0) tossed 7.0 innings allowing one unearned run on just five hits, while striking out five to earn the win.
ODU struck first with an unearned run in the first-inning, but Bechtel and George Heath, would allow nothing the rest of the way. Heath earned his first save of the year going two hitless innings, with one strikeout.
Marist scored four runs in the fifth and again in the ninth to provide all the offense the pitching staff would need for the game. Keith Brachold went 3-5 for the Red Foxes, driving in one run and scoring one of his own, while Tim Allen and Jimmy Board both drove in two runs for the Red Foxes. John McGorty was 2-5 in the game, scoring twice, and driving in a run, as did Eric Johnson, who was 2-6 with a run scored.
Johson singled home Andy Kiriakedes to tie the game in the fifth-inning. McGorty followed with an RBI single, to drive home Matt Griffiths. With two-outs in the fifth-inning, Allen singled to centerfield, scoring McGorty and Johnson, and a 4-1 lead. Board drove in his two runs in the ninth, as Marist tacked on four more runs to secure the win.
The Red Foxes will continue the series with ODU tomorrow, wrapping up the three-game set on Sunday.
