Box Score

FAIRFAX, VA - Junior Kyle Barrett singled with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to score sophomore Chris Looze from second base and lift George Mason to a 3-2 victory over Marist in a non-conference college baseball game Saturday afternoon at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field.

It was the second straight day George Mason scored in its last at bat to defeat Marist by a 3-2 score. Mason won its second consecutive game to improve to 6-6, while Marist dropped its third straight contest to fall to 5-3.

Junior Bruce Baldwin (2-5) got things started for the Patriots in the 11th with a one-out single. Looze followed with a single to left and Baldwin advanced to third when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Freshman Brian Dunleavy hit a sharp grounder to third, but the third baseman threw home to get Baldwin and prevent the tying run from scoring. Barrett then singled to right and Looze slid in safely just ahead of the tag for the winning run.

The Red Foxes took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fourth innings. Senior Tim Allen hit a one-out double and scored on a single by junior Jimmy Board (3-3) in the second, and senior Mike Sidoti scored on a two-out single by junior Tyler Brock in the fourth.

Mason got on the scoreboard in the sixth as senior Evan Howard led off with a double and scored one out later on a single by junior Jeff Palumbo (2-5). The 2-1 margin stood up into the bottom of the ninth before Palumbo led off with a single, went to second on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt and scored when Looze reached on another error on a double-play attempt to tie the score.

Freshman Mike Puckli (1-0) picked up the win by pitching the final two innings, while senior Chris Homer (1-1) took the loss for the Red Foxes. Both starting pitchers had excellent outings as Marist junior Chris Tracz allowed just four hits, no walks and struck out nine in eight innings, while Patriot sophomore Jake Glanzmann allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four in seven innings.

George Mason and Marist conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
