FAIRFAX, VA - Senior Ryan Kondratowicz pitched eight solid innings and a two-out George Mason error led to all three Marist runs as the Red Foxes defeated the Patriots, 3-1, in a non-conference college baseball game Sunday afternoon at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field.
It was the third straight outstanding contest between the two teams after George Mason scored in its last at bat in each of the previous two games for 3-2 victories. Marist snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-3, while George Mason had a two-game win streak stopped as it fell to 6-7.
A 6-6 right-hander, Kondratowicz (2-0) scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out five over eight innings to earn the victory for the Red Foxes. Sophomore George Heath pitched the ninth and recorded his third save.
Kondratowicz and Patriot senior right-hander Chris Murray (0-3) hooked up in a classic scoreless pitcher's duel into the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Marist junior Eric Johnson reached on an infield single and he would score as sophomore Keith Brachold reached on Murray's throwing error on his ground ball back to the mound. Brachold scored on a wild pitch, senior Mike Sidoti followed with a single and he scored on a double by senior John McGorty for a 3-0 lead.
Mason scored its lone run in the seventh as junior Nick Shimer led off with a single, went to second two outs later on a single by sophomore Matt Cooksey and scored on a single by junior Jeff Palumbo. Murray allowed seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, walking none and striking out six.
