Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team defeated St. Peter's, 57-51, this afternoon in the final regular season game at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes improve to 12-15 overall, and 8-10 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The 12 wins are the most since the 1995-96 season, while the eight in the MAAC are the most in school history since joining the conference in the 1997-98 season, eclipsing the old mark of seven.
St. Peter's got the early jump, but the Red Foxes hung in through the first half, securing the lead by a three-point shot taken by sophomore guard Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) with four seconds left, making the score 23-19. Marist shot 43.5 percent from the field while the Peahens shot 22.2 percent.
The Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run with eight minutes remaining in the game as they shot 54.5 percent from the field.
Sophomore center Kristin Keller (Millbrook, NY) set a season team-high in blocked shots with five, while also recording two steals for Marist. Stephanie Del Preore (Livingston, NJ) led all scorers with 15 points, going 7-9 from the field, while Nina Vecchio (Holmdel, NJ) added 10 points while dishing out five assists. Maureen Magarity (Wappingers Falls, NY) led the team in rebounding with five, while scoring eight points.
Senior Layla Willis, who scored 13 points, led St. Peter's, and Anna Barthold pulled down team-high six boards.
The Red Foxes open up post-season play as the number seven seed, facing number eight, Loyola College (MD.) at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, March 6th, at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ.
