Red Foxes Fall 8-5 To Manhattan In Night Cap

March 23, 2003

Box Score

Riverdale, NY - Senior Chuck Bechtel tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in Marist College baseball history this afternoon, leading Marist to a 14-0 win over Manhattan in the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header. The Red Foxes dropped the night cap 8-5, and will look to win the rubber game on Monday, at 3:00 pm, again in a game played at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.

Bechtel faced just two more than the minimum 27 batters and was perfect until the fourth when he issued a walk. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice, and then was caught stealing to end the inning. He would walk another batter in the seventh and a third in the ninth, but did not allow a runner to reach second base. He retired five opponents by strikeout, while allowing just eight fly balls, and retired 13 Jaspers via ground ball out.

Tim Allen helped preserve the no-hitter, the first time going deep behind second base to retrieve a grounder and throw out Diaz by a step. He then handled a sharply hit ball, flipping it to Eric Johnson for the force out at second, the final out of the game.

The Red Foxes bats provided plenty of offense for Bechtel, pounding out 14 runs on 19 hits. Allen was 3-5 with three RBI, while Matt Griffiths drove in five runs, going 3-5 and scoring a run. Jimmy Board also had three RBI for the Red Foxes, who scored the most runs in a single game thus far on the year.

Marist is now 7-6 on the year and 1-1 in MAAC play, while Manhattan improves to 7-9 on the year and are also 1-1 in conference play.

Manhattan scored three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never looked back, handing George Heath pitched out a jam in the ninth inning, striking out one and allowing two hits, but no runs.

Marist trailed 6-1 after three innings, before Jimmy Board in the fourth inning and Keith Brachold cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth inning with a two run homerun, but the Red Foxes could not get any closer. Marist scored a run in the ninth to make the final scored 8-5.

Allen finished the double-header 5-9 with three RBI and a run scored, while Sidoti was 4-10 on the afternoon. Eric Johnson went 3-7 and scored four runs in the first game, while Board went 4-8 with four runs scored in the twinbill.
