Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team dropped a non-conference double-header to visiting Brown University this afternoon, falling 5-2 in eight innings and dropping the nightcap 9-2. The Red Foxes fall to 23-12-1 with the losses while Brown improves to 13-23-1.
Keith Brachold (Attleboro, MA) was 2-3 in the first game, but went 0-3 in the nightcap, snapping his hit streak at 20 consecutive games. Brachold was on deck in the bottom of the seventh inning, when the game ended with a runner on third base. He falls two games short of the 1995 record, 22, of Mark Barron, and is only the second Red Fox to hit in 20 straight games.
Marist led the first game 2-1 until the top of the fifth when Brown pushed across a run to tie the game at 2-2. The Red Foxes had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push across a run in regulation. The Bears tallied three runs in the eighth, and Marist dropped the game 5-2. It was the second straight extra-inning game for the Red Foxes, who beat Vermont 5-4 in 12 innings on Tuesday.
The second game saw the Bears score twice in the first, which Marist answered in the second inning, but two Bear two-run homeruns, in the fourth, by Eric Larson, and in the fifth by Jeff Nichols, broke the game open. Three Brown pitchers held Marist to five runs, as Cameron Johnson earned his first win of the year, pitching two hitless innings of relief, allowing no runs and striking out four batters.
Ryan Kondratowicz (Fort Lauderdale, FL) took the loss in the first game, falling to 3-2, as he tossed the complete eight innings. HE allowed five runs, three earned, and struck out eight, while only giving up seven base hits. Travis Timmons (Georgetown, DE) struck out three in his 3.0 innings of work, but allowed five earned runs in falling to 2-2 on the year. Marist pitching combined for 13 strikeouts on the day, while walking only three batters.
Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) was 3-6 in the double-header with two RBI in the first game. Five different Red Foxes had base hits in the second game, with both RBI coming on a double by Bryan Towler (Hampton, NH).
Marist returns to action this Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27th with a three game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Canisius, beginning with a double-header at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
