Flushing Meadow, NYThe Marist College women's tennis team opened play at the 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tennis Championship with a 5-2 victory over the fifth-seeded Stags of Fairfield University, at the United States Tennis Center. The number four-seed, Marist will take on the winner of the evenings match between #1 Niagara and #8 Saint Peter's, Friday afternoon.
Marist started the win by capturing the doubles points, winning at number two and three doubles. Yana Tikhouko and Yana Krugly won at #2 doubles, 8-4, while Tara Dolan and Katie Szymanski won easily at #3, 8-2.
The Red Foxes went on to win four of the six singles matches contended, all in straight sets. Tikhouka wont he first singles mathc, 7-5, 6-2 over Diana Webb. Diana Perachio handled Erin Reeves at second singles, 6-3, 6-2, while Colleen Kelly defeated Ann Mullowney by the same score at number five singles. Dolan won her six singles match, 6-1, 6-2 over Christina Chachrone.
Krugly won the first set at number three singles, 6-4, before falling 2-1, (4-6, 1-6) to Megan Stauffer. Courtney McGeever played at number four singles, falling to Andrea Suriano, 6-1, 6-2. Perachio and McGeever dropped their number one doubles match 8-3.
