April 4, 2003
The Marist College Department of Athletics will participate in the National Student-Athlete Day on Sunday April 6th. The Red Foxes baseball (noon), women's lacrosse (noon) and softball (1:00 pm) teams will play at home, with the day culminating in a BBQ at the McCann Center at 4:00 pm, free for Marist student-athletes and $3.00 for family and friends. Admission to the sporting events is free of charge to everyone, so come out and support the Red Foxes on Sunday.
The event was created by the National Consortium for Academic and Sports and Northeastern University's Sport in Society program. The program is intended to honor STUDENT-athletes for achieving excellence both academically and athletically, while also making significant contributions to the community.
Marist is a member of the 10-team NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Red Foxes are four-time defending Commissioners Cup Champions, the first school in the 22-year history of the MAAC to win four straight cups and just the third to win four all-time. Marist is in its sixth year as a member of the conference.
The Red Foxes also excel academically, having a conference-high 99 student-athletes to the 2002 New York State Lotto MAAC Academic Honor Roll. The 2002-03 season is also a strong one academically for the Red Foxes, who have already had over 70 student-athletes honored on MAAC All-Academic Teams, with the spring sports yet to be honored.
The Department of Athletics also partakes in numerous community service projects, spearheaded by the CHAMPS/Life Skills staff. Marist student-athletes visit various elementary schools, help serve food at local soup kitchens, as well as participating in events such as the Heart Walk.
