Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College Baseball Team earned its fourth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win, defeating Rider, 5-1, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The second game of the scheduled double-header will be played on Sunday, prior to the scheduled nine-inning game.
Marist junior George Heath pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game for the Red Foxes.
The offensive came from Keith Brachold, who went 3-4 on the day, and has now hit safely in seven straight games. Brachold homered in the bottom of the seventh to give Marist the 5-1 lead, and finished with two RBI.
Trailing 1-0, Marist struck for a pair of runs in the fourth, off of Rider starting pitcher James Hoey. Kevin Grauer led off with a single, and advanced to third on a Tim Allen double. Grauer scored, and Allen advanced to third, on a sacrifice fly from Mike Sidoti. John McGorty provided the game winning RBI, as he singled up the middle in the next at-bat, playing Allen. The Red Foxes tacked on one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, to wrap up the scoring.
Hoey went eight innings for Rider, allowing all five runs, four earned, while striking out three and walking none. Marist knocked out nine hits on the afternoon, with two com from Allen, both doubles, and two from McGorty. Allen was 2-4 with two runs scored, while McGorty was 2-3 with two RBI.
Marist improves to 13-8-1 overall and 5-2 in MAAC play, while Rider falls to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The two teams will meet in a double-header on the McCann Field on Sunday, beginning at noon.
