Fishkill, NY - The Marist College baseball team added another chapter to its post-season lore, as newcomer Tyler Brock laced a double into the left field corner, with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Red Foxes trailing Niagara, 3-2. Pinch runner Jimmy Board slid home from first ahead of the relay, to give Marist the 4-3 opening round win. The Red Foxes advance to play LeMoyne, Friday at 3:00 pm in the winner's bracket game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament at Dutchess Stadium. Niagara, and Manhattan, who fell 11-0 to LeMoyne, will face off in the first elimination game at 11:00 am.
Marist starter Kevin Ool allowed a run in each of the first three innings, as Marist dug itself a 3-0 hole. Ool was masterful the remainder of the way, fanning 10, allowing only six hits, as he earned the complete game victory, improving to 6-1.
The Red Foxes got on the board in the third, and added a second run in the sixth, off of Niagara starter Avery. Avery earned a no decision, as he tossed eight innings of five-hit, two-run baseball. Fuller came into try and pick up the save, but allowed the two runs on three hits and fell to 4-4 with the loss.
Mike Sidoti started the ninth-inning rally with his only base hit of the evening, a single to right center field. John McGorty's sacrifice bunt moved Sidoti to second base, and Board followed with a single through the left side, to set up Brock's heroics.
McGorty finished the day 2-3with an RBI, and Board was 2-4 with the game-winning run. Brock had two RBI's, with the ninth inning double his only base hit of the evening.
The Red Foxes move to 32-18-1 on the year with the win, the ninth straight in MAAC Tournament action for Marist, who has won the last three conference tournaments. Niagara dropped to 26-24 with the loss.
