Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College baseball team won the rubber game of a three game set with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe LeMoyne, 8-0, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field, winning the weekend series 2-1. The Red Foxes improve to 28-14-1 overall, with the Senior Day victory, and 16-5 in MAAC play, while the Dolphins fall to 25-13 and 17-2 in MAAC play, losing back-to-back conference games for the first time this season.
Kevin Ool (Middletown, NY) tossed his second nine-inning complete game of the year, improving to 5-0, as he shutout the first-place Dolphins. Ool scattered eight hits in the effort and walked only one batter. The Red Foxes all-time leader in strikeouts, Ool, in his final game at the McCann Field, whiffed the final batter, Mike Pecchia, his only victim of the game, but the 257th of his career.
The Red Foxes gave Ool all the offense he would need in the first inning of the game, as Keith Brachold (Attleboro, MA) led off with a double to left field. After a groundout, Tim Allen (Wappingers Falls, NY) doubled to left to score Brachold, and would score two batters later on a John McGorty (West Sayville, NY) single.
After scoring a run in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, Jimmy Board (Ambler, PA) gave Ool some insurance runs with a towering homerun to centerfield, with Mike Sidoti (Staten Island, NY) on base, for a 5-0 lead. The Red Foxes added one more in the sixth and two in the eighth for the final tally.
Andy Kiriakedes (Greater Barrington, MA) had the best day at the plate for Marist, going 4-5 with three RBI, while Brachold went 3-5 with two runs. Board finished 2-4 with two RBI while McGorty and Allen both had a hit and an RBI in the effort.
Matt Scherer, a high school teammate of Tim Allen at Ketcham High School, took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits, striking out four. Four LeMoyne pitchers struck out nine batters while walking none, giving up 13 hits on the afternoon.
Marist will have five days off before traveling to Loudonville, NY to take on MAAC foe Siena, in a three-game set, May 10-11th. The Red Foxes will then host Seton Hall in a non-conference game, May 14th, at Dutchess Stadium, the site of the MAAC Tournament. Marist finishes the regular season at Iona, May 15-16th, for a three-game series.
