Women's Soccer Falls to Vermont 2-1 in Double OT

Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's soccer team could not hang on for its first win of the season, falling to Vermont 2-1 in double overtime.

The Red Foxes opened the scoring at 28:04, as freshman Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) fed junior forward Courtney Moore (Harwinton, CT/Lewis S. Mills) at midfield, who then broke away from her defender and booted the ball past diving Catamount keeper, Katie Duffy. It was Moore's third goal of the season and Caccamo's first assist of the year.

Vermont oushot Marist 7-5 in the first half, but Marist was able to fend off the Catamount attack with solid defense. The Red Foxes continued to hold Vermont scoreless for most of the second half and felt their first victory within their reach, but Catamount forward Jamie Koehnlein tied the game in the 85th minute off a pass from midfielder Susan Sullivan, sending the game into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Vermont midfielder Sara Jablonski connected with Nikki Hessney in the 112th minute, who then pushed the ball past Marist goalie Meredith Fabian (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) to seal the victory for the Catamounts.

Fabian played the entire game for the Red Foxes, making six saves, while Duffy made two for Vermont. Marist falls to 0-7-0 on the season, while Vermont improves to 4-2-1.

The Red Foxes will return to action in one week when they take on the University of Maine on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 pm on Leonidoff Field.
