West Point, NY- It may have been the coldest night so far this season, but the Red Foxes turned up the heat, winning their first game of the year 1-0 against Army.
Both teams came out strong, battling for possession early. The Black Knights, ranked ninth in the Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, seemed to have the upperhand, holding Marist to just one shot in the first half. But the Red Foxes picked through the savage Army defense in the second period, taking seven shots and connecting for the game's only goal.
With 23:01 remaining in the game, sophomore Kathleen Murray sent a direct kick wide and to the left. In the scramble for the loose ball in front of the net, senior Katie Tutak recovered and pushed it past Army goalie Morgan Bennett. The goal was Tutak's first of the season and Murray's third assist.
After the goal, the Red Foxes stepped up their defense, pressuring the Black Knight offense. Senior Meredith Fabian set a new career high, making 11 saves on the night, including three crucial stops in the closing minutes of the game.
With the win, Marist snapped Army's six-game win streak and notched their first shutout of the season. Conference play for the Red Foxes begins on Friday, October 3rd as they travel to Rider. Marist then heads to Loyola on Sunday, October 5th. The Red Foxes return home to Leonidoff Field on Friday, October 10th when they host Niagara at 7:00pm.
