POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Marist College (7-6, 3-1 MAAC) women's basketball team snapped their two-game winless streak with a 65-44 victory over conference rival Rider (3-11, 1-4 MAAC) this afternoon at the McCann Center.
After exchanging baskets for in the opening moments of the first half, the Red Foxes pulled ahead 15-14 on a three-pointer by Laura Whitney at the 10:07 mark. Whitney increased the lead to three on converting the basket on her own made steal. Whitney, who broke out of her scoring slump, finished with 14 points on the day, including the 10 in the first half.
The Red Foxes extended their lead to 10 points, but the Broncs came charging back ending the period on a 5-0 run to make the score 30-25 at the break.
Marist came out strong in the second half, going on a 13-2 run to open the period. Senior Nina Vecchio hit back-to-back jumpers to cap-off the streak. The Red Foxes continued to surge, extending their lead to as much as 26 points on a jumper by Whitney with 6:44 to go.
Senior Stephanie Del Preore, who scored her 900th career point, finished the day with 12 points on 4-6 shooting and five rebounds. Kristin Keller was also in double-figures with 12 points, while pulling down five boards.
Freshman Alisa Kresge, who made her first collegiate start, played well on the defensive end, recorded five rebound and a career-high four steals. On the offensive end, she dished out four assists, while scoring two points in a season-high 28 minutes of play.
As a team, the Red Foxes shot 42.6 percent from the floor, while Rider shot 32.7 percent. The Red Foxes scored 22 points off of 23 turnovers committed by the Broncs. They also outrebounded the Broncs 38-33.
Marist will be back on the court on Saturday, January 17th at 7:00pm as the Iona Gaels visit the McCann Center.
