Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team dropped a 78-74 decision to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Canisius College this evening at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes have a two-game win streak snapped, falling to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Griffs improve to 6-10 on the year and 1-4 in MAAC contests.
The Griffs took their largest lead of the night, 67-56 with 2:25 remaining in the game, but the Red Foxes would rally. Marist scored seven of the next nine points to close to 69-63 with 1:09 remaining. The Griffs would hit 7-10 from the free throw line in the final 69 seconds to hold off the Red Foxes charge. Brandon Ellerbee hot a three-pointer with 54 second to go to get to 70-66 and Carl Hood drained a trey with 41 to go to make the score 72-66. Will McClurkin tallied the next hoop and Ellerbee hit two free throws to close to 73-70 with 28 seconds left.
Kevin Downey turned the ball over and Hood went to the line hitting 1-2, which Darnell Wilson answered with a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 75-71 with 20 seconds left. Hood hit his final three nine second later to get to within one points, 75-74, but Dewitt Doss hit one free throw and missed the second with 8.8 remaining, which was rebounded by Wilson and put back in for the final margin.
Marist had five players score in double digits led by the 18 points of McClurkin. Jared Jordan scored a career-high 12 points, to go along with five assists and four rebounds. Chris Handy scored 13 points and had a game-high seven rebounds off of the bench for the Red Foxes. Hood finished with 13 points and Ellerbee with 11. The Red Foxes shot 44.3 percent from the field for the game, including 15-30, 50 percent in the second half.
The Griffs shot 61.5 percent from the field for the game, including an impressive 66.7 percent, 12-18 from the field in the second half. Canisius drained 9-15 from downtown, 60 percent. Downey led the Griffs with 18 points, followed by the 14-point and five assist effort of Doss. Toby Foster, who opened 4-4 from behind the arc, finished with 12 points and Jon Ferris came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds.
The teams finished tied with 31 rebounds a piece, while the Red Foxes doubled the visitor on the offensive glass 14-7. Marist also had half as many turnovers in the game, committing eight while forcing 16 from the Griffs.
Marist returns to action on Monday, January 19th, when it travels to Albany, NY to take on Saint Peter's in a game at Pepsi Arena. Scheduled to tip-off at 4:00 pm, the game will be aired live on the MSG Network.
